In this module you will learn about colors and Deco Sheets. By the end of this module you will be able to:
Explain what a deco sheet is and what it is used for
Create a deco sheet for your mega figure
develop minifigure design further by making a deco sheet and identifying the ‘molded’ colors of each piece
A deco sheet is used in manufacturing to show the decorations that will go on a finished product. It is used widely in the toy design field to standardize details and ensure quality.
A quality deco sheet will show the item from all necessary views, often front and back at minimum, but may also have side or top views. They are highly detailed and precise, with full color. Deco sheets will show the design with accessories and without, which means there may need to be duplicates of some views.
The original purpose of a deco sheet is to establish the colors of a product. For this purpose, the colors will often be called out separately on the sheet so the manufacturing team can easily ensure the right colors are used. Pantone is a company that has created an entire system of color matching to help companies to achieve consistent colors.
On the edge of the deco sheet is a place for you to identify certain colors. You can use colored pencils or another medium to create the colors on your deco sheets
On the worksheets for the DECO sheets, purposefully color your figure to show the colors and designs you will put on it. Take your time, this should be precise. You will make 2 deco sheets for your figure.
The first will be of the basic figure with no accessories, hair, or anything besides the 9 basic pieces. This will be what you use to make your figure and paint it.
The second will have the accessories added. This will help you to determine the actual size of your accessories so you know you're making them the correct size.
While these 3d printers can print in multiple colors, most individual plastic parts are only manufactured in one color. To best replicate current manufacturing techniques, the figures we are making will have each piece printed in a single color. We can choose which color for each of the 9 pieces, but details will be called out in the Deco Sheet.
To begin manufacturing of your figure, you will need to determine the base color for each of your pieces. Look at your deco sheet and determine what the predominant (main) color is for each piece. Fill out your worksheet for the colors your choosing. You will submit these in your exit ticket.
IMPORTANT NOTE: White and other light colors are somewhat transparent. That means, you can see colors through it. Because of this, you should try and avoid painting light colors on top of dark plastic. If you have large areas of light colors, you should choose something close to that color for your piece.
This deco sheet should be the most detailed and accurate drawing you've made to date. Make sure you photograph it so you have record of your work. This will also archive it, incase your composition book goes missing!
