In this module you will learn how we will get from our idea to a finished prototype. There are a few steps in the process and understanding what comes next will help you understand the purpose of each step. By the end of this module you will be able to:
Identify the steps in the design process
Explain the key features and purpose of each step
I can explain why each step is important and how each leads to the next
During the engineering process we have a step titled "brainstorm, evaluate, and choose solution." When evaluating and choosing our solution, we will justify our decisions by using our background knowledge and research.
To help in that justification and decision making process, we will break the step down a little smaller to better organize our process. This is still the engineering process, but with a more specified path to success.
As we learn the steps of the design process, create a flow map for in your composition notebook. Your flow map should specify each step of the design process and identify any key features and purpose of the step. You should also identify how each step builds off the previous step.
Before spending time drawing, we need to come up with ideas. The point of the brainstorming step is to come up with those ideas. In this step, there are no good or bad ideas. Every one is written down and will be evaluated later.
Here we'll pick our favorite ideas from the brainstorm and do a quick sketch to see what it might look like. These sketches don't need to be super accurate or detailed, just enough to get the idea on paper. If we know accessories, we can call them out, if not, that's not a problem! We will have a chance to come up with those later. We'll choose our favorite 12 ideas from the brainstorm list and make quick ideation sketches of them!
This is where we get into the details. After we make some ideation sketches, we will choose the ideas that we think will best meet the criteria to develop further. Development sketches may be black and white or color. They are normally more detailed and precise than the ideation sketches and may show multiple views or variations of the idea.
Once we choose the development sketches that will BEST meet the requirements, we will create a deco sheet. This is a full-color orthographic drawing that shows the design in detail. They will help us to determine the color each thing will be made and the paint and decals that will be applied.
Orthographic drawings are where we determine the size of our accessories. The orthographic drawing will show us all the important views to scale. We will choose the accessory items that we will best meet the requirements and draw them actual size so we know the size and can understand the shapes that make them up.
Now its time to start the first step!
Brainstorming is the process of coming up with ideas for your project. Brainstorming ideas are not to be judged yet. We will start by just writing them down.
The way we will brainstorm for this project is by making a circle map with all the ideas we can think of. Start by writing "Lego figure ideas" in the center of your paper and drawing a circle around it. Next fill the paper with different ideas you can come up with. It can be an occupation, movie/tv/video game character, person from your life, celebrity, or anyone else you can think of.
Be sure to take a picture of your brainstorming so it is clear and easy to read. This is can make a great addition to you technical writing publication at the end of your project!
